What is the beauty of a barn? Cameron Black discusses

Written by Cameron Black.

This week, director for Fine & Country Norfolk andNorth Suffolk, Cameron Black, discusses the merits of living in a converted barn.

We are certainly lucky in this wonderful county of ours with the selection of converted former outbuildings, which are readily available on the open market. The beauty of barns’ are that they are rarely the same, their individual nature quite often the reason why its owner decided to purchase in the first place.

I remember the first time I ever stepped foot inside a barn in Horsham St Faith and remember thinking to myself ‘Wow’. Everything from the vaulted ceilings and open plan space to the original materials kept in place during the conversion added to its appeal. And the best feature of all! They come in all shapes and sizes allowing people across all price spectrums to have the opportunity to enjoy barn life.

For me though it is the wonderful locations that these former farm buildings can be found in that most appeals. Once again, there are options. Some stand alone, although these are rare, most are in a complex of barns whilst some can be found with the main farmhouse closeby. More often than not, due to planning authorities, privacy has been assured with the focus generally away from your neighbour taking in the wonderful rural outlook that can so often be found with barns.

On your journey you will also notice a difference in materials used with each conversion. In the 1980s and 1990s pine and pamments were predominately used however as the new millennium approached there was a shift towards lighter materials including oak, travertine and granite enabling brighter spaces, which has now become synonymous with barn living. The unconverted barn has long been the domain of the developer however families have now taken the plunge with the opportunity to build their dream home their driving ambition. Fine and Country and barns have always enjoyed a healthy relationship. The barns’ wonderful character and their sometimes magical situation lend themselves to our professional photography and lifestyle brochure. We currently have a range of barns available including two with prominent market town positions in Aylsham and Wymondham, another enjoying a stunning rural position yet minutes from Dereham and a rare granary which enjoys stunning views out over the Wensum river! And the demand is still there as well with two barns sale agreed in the last week in excess of £600,000.

Having lived in a barn myself I can honestly say I enjoyed every minute.
