The benefit of the internet

By Jan Hytch, partner at Arnolds chartered surveyors in Norwich

Of course it’s no secret that the way people look for their next home – for sale or to rent – has changed dramatically in recent years. Buyers and tenants have increasingly chosen to rely on internet technology to inform them promptly of the availability of new properties coming to the market. Within seconds of the estate agent pressing the ‘make available’ button, the property website is sending text messages and emails to those who have registered and their requirements. Many property firms have invested heavily in information technology systems to make the search for your next property easier and quicker than it has ever been. Gone are the days of having to rely on the agent calling you by telephone to hear first about a new property – great if you’re Mrs Aardvark but it could be hours or the next day until it’s your turn for a phone call if you’re Mr Zuckerman! Now the property details, with photographs and description – can be in every applicant’s SMS or email inbox in the time it takes to say ‘Hi, I’m just calling to let you know about a property …’.
