My First House

My first owned home was a Victorian terrace house located on Bell Road in Norwich just off Sprowston Road.  I bought the property when I was 18 with assistance from my father supporting me with the deposit.  The house cost a mere £26,000 – I’m sure many first time buyers would love to buy a house at this price now!  At the time, I struggled with getting a mortgage however I eventually found one with the Cheshunt Building Society. I was encouraged by my parents to buy after living in Norfolk for the first 18 years of my life; my parents decided to move down south near Tunbridge Wells and I decided to stay in Norwich.

I loved most things about living in a terrace house and making a home for myself. I enjoyed the close proximity to the city centre – the walk home after a night out – taxis were not in the budget! The things I disliked were the coolness of the house and the fact that one of my neighbours was cautioned for stealing the ‘smalls from my linen line…. Wow, that was nearly 25 years ago! How time flies.
