The period after Christmas is always a busy time for Home Extension Team as clients discover that they need a larger kitchen to prepare the big family dinner, an extra bedroom for visitors, and a new bathroom for the growing teenagers. A typical day is spent mostly on site, meeting clients to agree specifications and finalise contract terms, attending site progress visits for projects already underway and meetings regarding workmanship and cost variations. Additional to this discussions are carried out with neighbours, planners, and Building Control Inspectors, as well as utilities suppliers and specialist finishers, landscape designers, decorators and kitchen fitters which keeps me busy on the phone. Back in the office there will be post to follow up, emails to read and design work to check along with the usual work involved with running a small business. Clients call in to the office to discuss design issues, costings etc. Contractors visit to clarify information, obtain specification details, plans and discuss work in the pipeline and Building Control Surveyors need technical information to process applications. During regular meetings with the designers we review plans and layouts, discuss ideas to give the client the best outcome to meet their requirements and consider materials and techniques. The design brief and technical requirements must be met and any cost implications discussed. My administrators keep me going with cups of coffee and biscuits! Carrying out building work is not straightforward – no two houses are the same even if they look identical outside as they are built and adapted by people and not machines. Our aim is to meet the client’s brief in terms of space and design requirements within acceptable cost parameters. Home Extension Team have designed and built over 1,000 extensions, loft conversions and conservatories over its first 20 years and we aim double that over the next 20 years!
